No solar, no rebate. The federal discount needs panels on the roof, either already there or going on at the same time. Switch to solar and a battery above to see what that costs. A battery on its own also has very little to store, which is why the saving collapses.

Start my checklistYour usage. We back out an estimated daily consumption from your quarterly bill, after taking off a typical NSW daily supply charge, at an assumed usage rate of 33c/kWh. Your bill does most of the work here. It's a better guide to what a battery will save you than the number of people in the house.
Battery size. We size the battery to cover the portion of your daily use that realistically shifts into the evening, not your whole day. Bigger isn't always better, and we'll say so if it isn't.
Federal rebate. Calculated at $252 per usable kWh, which is 6.8 certificates per kWh at a typical market price. That figure is then tapered: full rate on the first 14 kWh, 60% from 14 to 28, 15% from 28 to 50. The rate steps down on 1 January 2027 and roughly every six months after that.
VPP incentive. Estimated at $40 per usable kWh, capped at 28 kWh. There's no fixed rate. It moves with certificate prices and each provider sets its own offer, so treat this line as a guide.
Savings. A battery discharges in the evening, so every kWh it shifts saves the gap between what you'd have paid to import it and the 5c you'd have earned exporting it. The shift is capped by whichever is smallest: the battery, your evening use, or the solar left over after daytime use.
Your tariff. A battery earns its money in the evening, so what your evening power costs decides what it's worth. On time-of-use that's around 43c; on a single flat rate there's no evening premium to avoid, so it's nearer 34c. Rather than ask you a question most people can't answer without digging out a bill, this page uses 39c for everyone, deliberately not the flattering end. We ask properly in the checklist and price it exactly.
Who's home. An empty house exports more during the day, which leaves more solar to charge the battery with. We assume 20% of your power is used in daylight if you're out most days, 35% if you're in and out, and 50% if someone's home most of the time.
Weather. We model twelve months against three kinds of day: clear, partly cloudy and overcast. One average day per month isn't enough. A battery that half-fills on a grey Tuesday doesn't get to borrow Saturday's sunshine, and averaging that away quietly inflates the answer. It also means a bigger array keeps helping after the average day has surplus to spare.
Real-world losses. We knock 10% off the modelled result for charge held back for backup, imperfect control and the weeks a year nobody's home. On a typical setup this lands the battery at roughly 0.7–0.85 full cycles a day, which matches what installed systems actually do.
Travel. Jobs outside Sydney metro carry a loading for getting a two-person crew there and back. It's $250 to the Central Coast or Illawarra, up to $650 for regional NSW. It's in the price above rather than added later.
Existing solar. If you're adding a battery on its own, we use the array size you tell us. It's one of the three things that caps what a battery can save, so it's worth getting right. Shading, panel age and orientation will all shift the real figure.
New solar. When you ask for panels too, we size the array from your bill, covering daytime use plus a surplus to fill the battery, then round up to the nearest system we install. The kW and panel count are shown in the quote above.
What's not in here. Switchboard upgrades, three-phase work, long cable runs, double-storey access, tile roof penetrations and any council or network requirements. These are real costs and we'd rather quote them than surprise you.
Rebate eligibility. You need existing or concurrently installed solar, a battery on the CEC approved product list, and an SAA-accredited installer. We check all three for you before quoting.
How we work
Solar Earth Australia is a two-person business, father and son: a licensed electrician and an accredited system designer. We don't sell systems and hand the installation to whichever contractor is free that week.
The difference shows up after handover. Warranty work, monitoring questions and network paperwork come back to the two people who did the job rather than a service queue.

Questions
No. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount works through small-scale certificates, which we create and assign on your behalf. It comes off your invoice as a discount. You never see a form or wait for a payment.
You can install one, but the federal rebate requires solar on the roof, either already there or going on at the same time. Without solar a battery only shifts cheap off-peak power to peak times, which rarely pays for itself in NSW. We'll be straight with you about the numbers.
The discount is paid in small-scale technology certificates, and the number of certificates per kWh is set on a declining schedule that runs until the scheme ends in 2030. Since May 2026 it steps down roughly every six months rather than annually. The next drop is 1 January 2027. On a typical 13.5 kWh battery each step is worth several hundred dollars, so waiting has a cost.
A virtual power plant lets your retailer draw on your battery during peak demand, in exchange for a joining incentive and ongoing credits. Worth knowing: to qualify for the federal rebate your battery has to be capable of joining one, but you're never obliged to actually sign up. It's usually worth joining if you have spare capacity, and usually not if you bought the battery mainly for blackout backup. We'll walk through the specific offers available to you.
Only if it's set up for it. Backup needs a changeover device and a nominated backup circuit: usually lights, fridge, internet and a few power points, rather than the whole house. It adds cost, so we ask rather than assume.
A straightforward single-phase battery is a one-day job. Add solar, three-phase, a switchboard upgrade or whole-home backup and it's usually two. Network approval before the install typically takes one to three weeks, and we lodge that for you.
Then we tell you why, in writing, before you commit to anything. The usual culprits are switchboard upgrades, long cable runs, double-storey access and tile roofs. The estimator on this page deliberately excludes them so the number isn't quietly padded.
